 1. Beginning   I wished that I could die. Die, and for once be at peace. Instead of cooped up on  what should have been a beautiful day in early September. Of course, for me, nothing could be more painful. It seemed as though everything in this world had been designed to torment me.  This was not something I grew used to; each day seemed even more impossibly painful.   I pressed my face against the cool leather of the armchair, inhaling the  wonderfully fresh scent. I stared intently at the surface of the chair, following the creases  in the fabric with my eyes. Distraction helped to tune out the multiple voices that rushed  around my already crowded head, moving as quickly as cars on a freeway. I wondered often about the meaning and reason behind my ability. Sometimes it  could be considered a gift, but the majority of the time, it was nothing short of a curse.  These four voices that I blocked out of courtesy kept bouncing around my mind,  ricocheting off the inside of my skull, or at least that was how it seemed.  Apparently, though, diffusing my so-called gift was not as easy as I would have  liked it to be.               Sebastian, you seem really down lately. Kurtas’ deep mental voice filled my head.  I shrugged, knowing he would see me. Kurtas’ thoughts weren’t all that bad, mainly  because he never thought anything that he wouldn’t have said. His thoughts now were  mainly focused on the fact that his beloved Katerina had beaten him in a simple game of  chess. While Kurtas had the upper hand when it came to almost anything physical, his  strategic planning skills were practically non-existent.             Colin was upset by the fact that he had been outdone again. I shuddered as I  relived the moment that had occurred the previous Tuesday. We had come far too close to  an incident, and the hunting trip was scheduled for sometime tomorrow. Colin was  considering how hard it would be at High School today, surrounded by all of the  humans…             I yanked myself out of his head, and tried to think of other things.             Yes, school would be hard. Besides the obvious monotony, the entirety of the day  would be spent guarding Colin.              Sebastian. Selena called my name in her head, grabbing my attention  immediately. I nodded, and waited for her to continue.   Colin is hurting…Isn’t he? I grimaced. This small change of expression signified  her instantly, and her shoulders slumped in disappointment. Hmm. Well, I could make you tea…  I turned to face her, my frown deepening by a degree and a half. “Which I would only have to regurgitate later.” I reminded her. She stuck out her  tiny tongue at me, stood and flounced away in the direction of the dining room. I thought that you’d be happy…Her mental voice was pouting, and I could only  imagine how she would look: her lower lip pushed out, her eyes deep and brooding,  sulking.  “That was your mistake, not mine.” I said, my voice showing just how much  interest this conversation held for me; none. You’re so boring. “Not boring, sensible.” I said, my voice still maintaining the same dead, drained  tone. Same thing, longer word. She returned, carrying a small lump of paper under her  arm. Horoscopes. Read them or die. She tossed the paper at me. I sighed, catching and  opening it in one swift motion. I gave her a long, meaningful glare, which she ignored, and then began to read the  horoscope section aloud. “April 20, Taurus. ‘Love and war may be coming your way, so watch out! Trust  your family, as you may soon need them for support. White is your lucky color, and red  liquids may seem to be your only thirst-quenchers!’” I gave her a look, and set down the  paper. Red liquids…Hmm. Well, they were right. I foresee much turmoil in your future. I  watched as her expression turned from shock to horror. The fact that a human could keep  up with a legitimate psychic seemed to disgust her. I allowed my mouth to slip into a  small half smile, and then turned back around, resuming my previous task of attempting  to ignore the voices in my head. Put on a CD. In thirty seconds, you’re going to stand up, turn around and— “Beat you senseless?” I asked, my voice void of all emotion. Really, Sebastian…She sighed, then turned around and danced up the stairs  towards her room, her long brown hair floating around her head like a cloud.            Hyaah! Selena’s mental shout alerted me instantly. I threw up my hand to catch  the projectile that had just been whipped at the back of my head.            “Love the battle cry, Selena.” I said sarcastically. “But next time, why don’t you  just write me a letter saying when you’re going to throw something.”            Selena sighed a second time, her high, musical voice making the sound as  beautiful as wind chimes.              It’s a CD, Sebastian.            “Very good, Selena.” I clapped my hands lightly, giving her a look of mock  congratulations.            Just put it on. I groaned, knowing that she would give me no peace unless I did  what she told me to. I popped the CD in the player, and immediately, Beethoven’s 9th  Symphony was filling the room.            “Thank you, Selena.” I said, looking up at her approvingly. She smiled, and then  disappeared into her bedroom.            “I suppose it’s just you and me, Beethoven. You, me and the voices in my  head…” My voice dropped off near the end of that statement, realizing belatedly just how  crazy it made me seem.  It was her thoughts that I heard first.            Katerina’s mind was rarely ever a surprise; it was just as self centered and shallow  as she was. Why should this particular occasion be any different?            Hmm… I do like the jacket. But I think that it’d look much better in blue. Actually,  it’s a tie. There’s no way I could look better than this; I’m complete and total perfection.            The door opened, and I felt the fresh autumn breeze blow through the living room,  carrying with it the scent of perfume. I sighed and attempted yet again to block out the  constant stream of thoughts.            “Still depressed, Basta?” Rina asked, shrugging off her designer jacket. She sat  down on the leather-upholstered couch, legs folded primly.             “You should really listen to something happier. Like…” She pondered this for a  moment. “Linkin Park.” I groaned. No matter how many times I tried, I just couldn’t  force myself to sit and listen to ‘screamo’, or ‘emo’ or whatever kind of mo it was.             Selena walked down the staircase, and then sat down next to Katerina. Her eyes  were shining, but her thoughts were unfocused. Well, to be precise, they were very  focused, but the were focused on such illogical things that she could only be trying to  hide her mind from me. Katerina looked at me, and I shrugged. I really had no idea.             “So, how long until Tatiana gets back?” Selena asked, her voice chirping along at  incredible speeds.  “Why don’t you just tell us, little Ms. Freakshow.” Rina said, staring at her shoes.             “I wish I could!” Selena wined, resting her head in the palm of her hand.             “Hey, Katerina!” Kurtas said, jumping over the railing and landing with a crash.  The floorboards groaned with the effort, but like almost most of the things in this house,  they were made to withstand almost everything.            “You’re going to break the floor one of these days, Kurtas.” Colin said, emerging from his room.            “Will you stay with me during my spare?” Selena asked Colin, looking at him  adoringly.              “Why would you even ask that?” He said, smiling at Selena. Selena was one of  the few people who could get Colin to smile. “I mean, I can’t leave you all alone in a  giant school, where anyone could swoop in and steal you from me…” He poked her nose,  and she laughed. For a few, precious seconds, we could have been normal. What a  beautiful dream. But all dreams must eventually come to an end… And our rude awaking  was brought on by none other than Katerina.              “Well, we should head to the school.” She said, readjusting her perfectly faded  denim jeans. She sighed, standing again.             “Blaire will have our heads if we’re late for the first day of school.” Colin said  playfully, but rushed back upstairs to gather his things.             “I’ll drive.” Kurtas said, grabbing his keys off of the antique coffee table. He  turned just before he closed the door, and muttered. “This’ll be interesting…”                                           As we walked into the cafeteria, I could hear the thoughts turning to us. The entire  student body appeared to be thinking as a whole today; all thoughts were focused on the  trivial drama of the new transfer students arrival. It took so very little to work them up. I  had seen her face a thousand times over, repeated in thought after though from every  conceivable angle. The welcoming committee was undeserved. She was as ordinary and  commonplace as any other human. The excitement over her arrival was all too  predictable. Over half of the males were already imagining themselves in a love with her,  just because she was something new to look at.   Katerina walked ahead of Selena and I, pulling Kurtas in her wake. Selena kept up  a long line of endless chatter to distract Colin as we walked towards our table, and  Kurtas was grinning widely at everyone in sight. He watched in glee as the all backed  away, noticeably frightened.             I shook my head knowingly as I sat down. Kurtas had always had a slightly  warped sense of humor. How’s he doing? Selena turned to me, flicking her hair slyly in Colin’s direction. I shrugged, then frowned slightly. Nothing that would alert anyone else to our  silent conversation. Selena closed her eyes and layed her head down on the table,  searching.             I frowned a second time as Selena flicked over ‘The Devil’ and ‘Death’ multiple  times. Selena’s eyes widened as she saw ‘The Empress’. Will it happen now? She thought  anxiously. I shook my head slightly.              Is there any immediate danger? I shook my head again, and sighed. Selena  relaxed, and then leaned her head on Colin’s shoulder.              No, there was no immediate danger, but there would be, if we continued to push  him like this. Last Tuesday was a horrible incident, and only proof that our two week  long periods of hunting dormancy were far to long for him. He needed to hunt every  night.               For us, two weeks was not a particularly long time. Perhaps a bit uncomfortable at  Times—if a human walked too close, if we accidentally ended up downwind of them. But  this rarely happened. Humans would never understand what their instincts told them; that  we should be feared, that we were dangerous.              And right now Colin was very dangerous.             At that moment, petite and gothic Thalia Vallen walked over to the table  closest to us, where Willa Anderson and the new student were sitting.  Thalia shook her hair out, running her fingers through her black and red dye job. She pulled her hair up into a ponytail, sending a few loose hairs into the air. They caught  the wave of air from the heating vents and drifted towards our table, saturated in her  scent. I could say honestly that her scent was quite appealing, for a human.             But now my interest was doubled, intensified by Colin thirst as well as just my  own. Colin was letting his imagination get away from him. He was picturing it—  picturing getting up from his seat beside Selena and going to stand beside her.  Thinking of how he would lean into her neck, allowing his lips to brush lightly  over her jugular vein. Imagining just how the rhythmic pulse of her blood would  feel under his mouth…             I kicked the leg of his chair, which skittered out from underneath him. He fell  onto his back, his face a mask of surprise and fury.             I could hear rebellion and sorrow wage war against each other in his head.  “Sorry.” He muttered, standing and setting his chair upright again.  “Don’t worry, Colin.” She murmured, her high-pitched voice moving too fast for  any human to understand. “You wouldn’t do anything.” Kurtas chocked on a laugh. Colin whipped around so quickly it was barely a  recognizable movement and hissed at Kurtas.  I looked to Selena, and mouthed ‘Danger’. Selena put one hand on his chest, and  began to hum softly to him. Colin slowly un-clenched his fists, and hugged Selena,  murmuring words of apology in her ear. “It helps to remember that they are people.” Selena suggested, her high musical  voice moving to fast for human ears to understand, if any had bothered to listen. “Her name is Thalia. She likes anime, The Clash, The Cure and The Smiths. She’s an orphan,  and is living in a foster home right now. She had a crush on you until two weeks ago.”  Selena finished, a forced smile on her face.              “I know that.” Colin said curtly. He turned his head to glare murderously at an  group of innocent freshmen, who all squeaked and shifted away under his gaze. His tone  ended the conversation.   Selena sighed, and skipped away from the table, carrying her tray of uneaten  food—props, as it were—with her and leaving him alone. She knew when he had had  enough of her help. While Kurtas and Katerina had the most physical relationship, it was  Selena and Colin who knew each other as thoroughly as they knew themselves. Perhaps  even more so.               Sebastian.              Reflex reaction. My head turned to the sound of my name being called, although  it wasn’t being called, only thought.  I found myself staring into a pair of wide indigo blue human eyes, set in a  delicate-looking heart-shaped face. I had already seen the face, repeated in a hundred  separate minds. The girl that everyone was thinking about. The new transfer student,  Cadmium Phorenger. She was an orphan, and she had come to live her when her older  brother had needed treatment for his tuberculosis. She lived in a high-class apartment  building in downtown Victoria. People called her Caddy, being it that her given name  was such a mouthful…       I turned away, bored. It had only taken me a second to realize that she had not  been the one to think my name.  As if! She notices them first? Well, of course, she wouldn’t know about the  Vallens… I heard the first thought continue.               I now recognized the ‘voice’. Thalia Vallen—this was a nice change. It had been  awhile since I had listened to her.               It was immensely relieving when she had given up her misplaced infatuation  towards Colin. Her constant fantasies had become nearly inescapable, and I had  considered letting Colin have his fun for once, just to get her off of my mind. Although,  what with her taste in music, clothing and pop-culture, I couldn’t be certain that she  would object to having her death dealt to her by a vampire. “They’re the Vallens.” I heard her responded brusquely, brushing a strand of her  chopped-and-dyed hair out of her eyes. I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I mean, even  the Vallen family, staring. Arthur, Jared and Keith…She winced on the last name. Keith  Finley, the current object of her affection, was completely oblivious to her. Apparently  not to the new girl though, and although Thalia wasn’t a spiteful person, she had become  nearly blinded by jealousy.                             Related to them. That would rock. God, I hate mom. She won’t even splurge for  contacts, and these glasses are hideous…  I tried to tune out the endless babble of her thoughts before they could drive me  mad.  Kurtas interrupted my concentration. So, what’s with you checking out the new  girl? “Thalia’s telling her our Life Story.” I said, forcing my head to turn towards him. “Warts and all?” He asked aloud, smiling. I grinned back. “Nope. Just a hint of interloping within the gene pool.” I replied casually. So, is the noob afraid of us yet?                         I listened to hear what Cadmium would think of Thalia’s story. Just what did she  see when she looked at the strange, pale skinned family that was universally shunned? Man, she’s so pretty— Keith’s head was not where I wanted to be right now.            I’m gonna go to the library and see if I am related to the Vallens. Thalia wasn’t  helpful at all. Mom’s going to need my help tonight, what with the— I sighed as I passed over  Willa’s thoughts, and searched for the one, new voice in among all of the familiar ones. Nothing. I frowned. Was she not thinking of anything at all? I could hear her  talking in full, coherent sentences to Thalia, so I knew that not to be the case. So why  couldn’t I hear her? I listened harder, exerting much more effort than I ever had before. Nothing. It  was as silent as if she wasn’t there.  I turned to look back at her table, unsettled by her silence. She hadn’t moved at  all. So why wasn’t I able to hear her thoughts? This was utterly infuriating. Never before had I felt so… Deaf. I felt deaf and  dumb to the world, so long as Cadmium was the world.  I pushed harder, concentrating on my powers as though they were a hand,  searching. What I found was a wall, a solid brick wall. Cadmium’s mind wasn’t missing,  it never had been. It had been shielded, hidden, from the outside world.            “Hey…” Cadmium said thoughtfully. “Who’s that one? With the reddish-brown  hair?”  “Oh, right. That’s Sebastian Vallen. He’s single, but don’t get your hopes up. He  doesn’t date.” Thalia said, with a small sigh that sounded like remorse. “Hey, you mind if we join you?” I looked up at the unfamiliar voice. A tall,  slender Amazonian looking-girl was standing in front of Cadmium’s table. Behind her  stood a taller, blond haired male, and a tiny black hair Asian girl. Although I didn’t  recognize them on a personal level, I did know what they were: Vampires. I poked  Selena, whose attention instantly turned to the table where the three unknown vampires  stood.             “I’m Senna Arcovira, and that’s Mortimer Dickens and Ichigo Hanazono.” The  tall one, Senna, said, gesturing at the people behind her. I noticed that Ichigo’s eyes were  glowing bright purple; the sign of an unstable vegetarian, or a very new one. Either way,  it wasn’t good.             “We’d like to sit at your table, since we’re new here.” Senna said, smiling widely.             Creepy… Keith thought, shifting away from Senna. Thalia looked up at Senna, a  grimace on her purple painted lips.             “Of course.” Willa said quietly, pulling out a chair for Senna, who sat down,  smiling. I turned to Selena, who shook her head.            They’re no threat. They’re like us, except for the fact that they try to befriend  humans, instead of avoid them like they’re the plague. I relaxed. As long as that was it,  we shouldn’t have a problem.            “I’m sorry, but I didn’t catch your name. Cadmium, was it?” Senna asked  sweetly, her voice ringing with a childlike innocence. I looked up at Selena, who closed  her eyes.             She’s not faking it. She is a very sweet person, but she also appears to be a  pyromaniac… Selena half-grinned at me, and I looked back to the table.            “Yes, that’s right. You are so nice, Senna.” Cadmium replied, shifting her weight  slightly. The pale blue dress that she was wearing had a low neckline, and I could see the  blood pulsating though her veins underneath the thin layer of skin. Colin seemed to have  noticed this as well, and I couldn’t help but notice the small movement that put him  slightly closer to Cadmium’s table.              “Colin!” I hissed, throwing an orange at his head. Upon the moment of contact,  the soft fruit exploded, sending a shower of sticky citrus juice down Colin’s back. He  turned to glare at me, but muttered a muffled apology and sat back down.            “Right. How very human.” Katerina said exasperatedly, and leaned forward over  the table, sending her long strawberry-blond hair in a cascade over the table.              Colin straitened himself up, and returned to staring at Cadmium’s table. Thalia  stood up, running her fingers through her black and red dye job. He saw himself going over to  her table, and then asking her if he could show her something. No, with Colin, it would  more be telling her what she was going to do. Colin’s gift worked with perfect? accuracy  on humans, more so than on vampires.              I chuckled darkly as I considered how Thalia would feel if she knew that Colin  spent just as much time imagining him with her as she did. Only, in his mind, the perfect?  Cinderella story was marred horribly by bloodshed.               “Colin…” I muttered, bouncing an orange up and down in my hand. He sighed,  and stood up to leave, gathering his tray of prop food.              “You did wonderfully.” Selena crooned, patting his hand apologetically. “You  controlled yourself before Sebastian had to waste more perfectly fine fruit on your  head.” She glared at me, and then grinned. “Speaking of which, we’d better get you a  new shirt…” She walked off, her arm linked in his.             “Hmm. Well then, goodbye!” Katerina called out after Selena. She stood  up, pulling Kurtas up by his t-shirt collar. She tugged him away from the table, towards  their next class.             I sat at the table alone, and returned to my previous tasks of watching Cadmium.  Even boring as she was, looking at her was better than nothing. She shifted away slightly,  looking a bit off put by the arrival of the vampires, and Thalia’s hasty and unexplained  disappearance. But I could only see, only imagine what I could not hear.              There were dark bags under her eyes, and she looked exhausted, like she hadn’t  had a good night’s in a few days. Her posture was just a bit to perfect? for a human,  and she sat a smidgen too still. Minute details that no one else would have noticed, save  Colin. Her eyes turned to me once again, a deep, dark purple blue. She smiled nervously,  then turned her eyes back towards the people at her table.             Sighing, I rose from my seat and began to walk towards my next class. Kurtas,  Katerina, Colin were all playing the roles of seniors. I had a younger part to play.  I took my normal seat near the back of the classroom. The girl sitting next to me,  an exceptionally pleasant girl named Melissa Bank, turned to face me.             “So, what do you think?” She asked, her voice an excited whisper. I bet he likes  her! Her internal voice giggled. I sighed, cross to have to uphold the charade of  humanity.             “Think about what?” I asked rhetorically, and allowed a small half smile to play  upon my lips. She grinned hugely, showing her braces, this month done up in pale blue  and green. She shook her head, sending her pin-straight sandy brown hair flowing in my  direction. I leaned back a bit, widening the space between us.             “The new girl, Cadmium!” She said excitedly. “You’re the only male who hasn’t  been talking about her all day. Although I did see you staring at her…” She raised her  eyebrows suggestively.              “Well, I don’t really see what all the fuss is about.” I answered honestly,  chuckling. “I suppose that she’s pretty, but she more looks…fragile.” I shook my head as  though I couldn’t make heads or tails of the situation.              “Hmm… True to that.” She said, leaning back into her seat. Wow. Sebastian is so  understanding! It’s as if he sees everything in a different light… She smiled at me once  more, then directed her attention the front of the classroom, where our teacher, Mr.  Pippin Fielding, was about to announce today’s lesson plan.             “Now, students.” He announced in his thick, British accent. “Today we have an  addition to the student body. I’m sure most of you have already seen the new transfer  student, Cadmium Phorenger. Cadmium, come up here, please.” He gestured towards  the door, and Cadmium walked shyly towards the front of the classroom. She had her  books presses tightly against her chest, as though she might accidentally drop them at any  moment.             “Why don’t you say hello to your new classmates, Caddy Darling.” He asked,  gesturing towards the waiting class. She inhaled roughly, as though she couldn’t believe  what was happening.              “Um, Hi…” She said, waving quickly. She tightened her grip on her books, and  her strange purple eyes darted around, as if looking for an escape route.             “Hmmm. Suppose that’ll have to do.” Mr. Fielding said, scratching the back of  his head. Not much of a greeting, but…”Anyway, go find a seat and sit down, poppet.”  Cadmium smiled hastily then turned and walked towards the back of the room.             I sighed. The only available desks were in the middle of the front row, a spot well  avoided, and the desk next to me. She sat down quickly, then sat still as stone waiting for  instruction.              “Alright, turn to page 300 in you textbooks—blimey!” Mr. Fielding exclaimed,  wiping his forehead. If it gets any more humid, I’ll cook! “Sorry, mate and mate-etts. I’m  just gonna open the window a tad.” He crossed the room quickly, and opened the window  to Cadmium’s right.             The warm air streamed in from the window, signifying the wind speeds beyond  the concrete walls. I considered how uncomfortable Cadmium must feel, so close to what  rightfully should be her hunter. She stared down at her text book, and then stood, and  began to walk towards the front of the room.  And then she walked into the flow of the humid, September air that blew towards  me from the window.   Her scent hit me as hard as if it were a physical force. It felt like I was being hit  by a train, run over by a transport truck, being thrown off a cliff, being lit on fire,  drowning, and all at the same time. There simply weren’t words to describe just the  impact her scent had on me in that moment. In that moment, everything was illuminated. No longer did the few shreds of  humanity I had managed to cloak myself in remain. I was a vampire, and she was my  prey.             For she had the sweetest blood I had smelled I over 400 years.              I hadn’t known she could exist. Why did she exist? I didn’t really care. If I had  known she existed, I would have searched the earth for her, perhaps even the stars. I  could imagine the taste             Thirst burned in my throat like liquid bleach. My mouth was desiccated. The  excess venom in my mouth did not help to quench the thirst. My muscles coiled, ready to  spring.              Not a full second had passed. She was still taking the same step that was  to bring her closer to the front of the room, away from me. Away from the window.              I wanted to push her away, to yell to her to run, but it felt as if the second I  moved, I would attack her, and it would all be over.             As her foot touched the ground, her head turned slightly, as so that she could look  at me through her peripheral vision. Her eyes widened as she took in my expression,  which I now saw reflected in her eyes. The face of a killer.              I heard her inhale sharply, gasping for air as though she had forgotten how to  breathe. Her entire head turned now, forgetting that she was mid-step.              As the upper half of her body turned towards me in surprise, and the lower half  continued forwards, her other foot came down to meet the floor.              I heard the crack first. She gasped, and then fell forward. An instantaneous human  reaction, she threw her arms forward before her head could connect with the floor. Her  chest hit the floor next, followed by her head.              And she was out of the path of the air. The clean, untainted air washed over my  face, and I gasped gratefully. The humans finally reacted, rushing over to see if she was  alright. All but one.              “Oh my god, Caddy! Are you okay?” Melissa gushed, tears spotting in the corners  of her eyes. Caddy nodded rapidly, and then attempted to stand, only to find 17 sets of  hands pushing her back against the ground.             “I’m fine, really.” Cadmium muttered, blood flowing to her cheeks again , turning  them a delicious shade of pink, and it was all I could do to stay seated. I sat as still as I  could, resisting all urges to go over to her.  As if it wasn’t enough that my monstrous side wanted to kill her, my humane side  wanted me to go over and help her. I dismissed the feeling as some long-buried protective  instinct; the strong for the weak.             She certainly looked the part. Her fragile limbs were only concealed by a  thin, pale membrane of skin. And she hadn’t cloaked herself in a suit of armor, as she  rightfully should have, but a pale blue dress made of some sort of a cotton-polly blend.              “Poppet, you should go to see the nurse.” Mr. Fielding said, his voice a strange  cross between begging and laughing. Just who was she… “Whomever you were watching  is a lucky man.” He muttered to her under his breath, winking.              “No really, I’m—” As she attempted to stand, her one foot twisted out from  underneath her and she fell back onto the ground. She lay on her back, blushing furiously  up at Mr. Fielding’s knowing smile. She groaned disgruntled, and then propped herself  up on her elbows.             Perfect attendance, not one wrong answer, probably smarter than me…“Mr.  Vallen.” Mr. Fielding said, looking from Cadmium to me. “Escort Ms. Phorenger to the  nurse’s office.”              “I could do it!” Keith spoke out. I turned to him in surprise. I hadn’t realized that  he was in the same class as me.              Come on! Why’d he choose him? Sebastian has been glaring at her since the  minute she decided to sit next to him…Keith’s thoughts were angry, resentful. But they  were also worrying. He noticed far too much.              “You, Mr. Finley?” Mr. Fielding said, turning to face Keith. Keith nodded.  “Alright, then. Just copy Sebastian’s work at the end of class; you’ll need it to study.”             Sebastian this, Sebastian that… “Yes, of course.” Keith walked over to Cadmium,  and awkwardly draped her arm over his shoulder. She grimaced, but from the pain or the  company, I couldn’t tell, although something in me hoped for the latter.             How strange, these unexplainable emotions were!
