Mr. Mariner himself Edgar Martinez the sweet swinging righty among other things put the Designated Hitter on the map establishing it as a legitimate position in baseball.

Originally signed in 1982 to a minor league contract five years later after perinially batting over .300 in the minor leagues he finally got his chance over the "bonus babies" and the rest is history.

During his tenure with the Mariners he collected two batting titles and five silver slugger awards. He finished first or second in on-base percentage in 6 different seasons, and top 5 in on-base percentage in ten different seasons.

His career on-based percentage (.418) is good enough for 13th all time, and his .933 OPS is 17th best all time. Since 1946 only two hall of famers have finished with an on base percentage better then Edgar's .418. Those two being the Splendid Splinter himself Ted Williams, and Mickey Mantle.

After retiring the Designated Hitter of the Year award was renamed the "Edgar Martinez Award".

Currently he is working on establishing a bank for hispanic decent people and manages his Caribbean Apparel store.
