Windows Vista is the highly touted new OS from Microsoft. This will be their first major operating system upgrade since Windows XP. The official release date has now been set at January 30, 2007.

This will miss the coveted holiday season sales, however Microsoft is offereing a coupon program where if you purchase a new computer with XP on it they will upgrade to the equivalent version of Windows Vista.

Vista features major upgrades in the user interface, including the much anticipated Aero graphical system. It also includes nice upgrades to the media center edition of XP, including better music and video management, as well as the ability to set your movie as the background of your applications. So you can seamlessly work on other things while watching a movie.

Finally they have included major data management upgrades including file "previews" and better hard drive management by the OS as well as hard drive encryption capabilities and other various security upgrades.

There are also a lot of "behind the scenes" upgrades to Windows Vista, that will likley go unnoticed by all but the most technologically minded. Things such as the .NET Framework 3.0 and the "WinFX" abilities.

The versions of Vista that will be available are as follows:

Windows Vista Home Basic:
-includes security upgrades from Vista, Instant Search, IE7. (not really that much of an upgrade from XP and the likley future Service Pack 3)

Windows Vista Premium:
-includes security upgrades, Instant Search, IE7, Aero, Windows Metting Space, Media Center.

Windows Vista Business:
-includes security upgrades, Instant Search, IE7, Aero, Windows Meeting Space, Advanced Backup features, Business Netowrking and Remote Desktop.

Windows Vista Ultimate:
-includes all the features previously listed.

Summary:

Overall Vista seems like a pretty solid upgrade if your computer has the ability to run the Aero graphical stuff. If not I'd stick with Windows XP and wait for service pack 3, which will likley come with most of the other upgrades that Vista has built in.
