 First off, proceed at your own risk, backup stuff and put out a hefty insurance policy... And throw some salt over your shoulder.

Done? Ok, let’s begin.

The first thing you need is "Resource Hacker", which can be found here: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Now locate your ntoskrnl.exe file which is found under c:\windows\system32. Back this file up by making a copy and renaming it something like ntoskrnl.bak or whatever.

Next open “Resource Hacker” and then open the ntoskrnl.exe file.

On the left you will see resources that you can edit. Open the tree called “Bitmaps” and you will see numbers 1-10; numbers 1, 8, and 10 are the WinXP Pro bitmaps. 1, 7, and 9 are for Home Edition. Edit according to your version. I personally use XP Pro so we will go through that one for this “howto”.

Now select number 1, then go to the action menu and click ‘save Bitmap’.

Save them wherever you please, just remember where you put them. Do this for 8 and 10 as well. Now you can use whatever image editing software you like.

After you have edited them how you please and saved them, go back to “Resource Hacker” again and open the ntoskrnl.exe (again). Then go to the “Action / Replace Bitmap”

Select the Bitmap to replace 1, then click the “Open file with new Bitmap” and find your edited boot logo. Finally click replace. Repeat for 8 and 10.

When you’re done select “Save As” and save your new ntoskrnl.exe to a directory that is not your system32 directory. Now you will need to reboot your computer into safe more. To do this reboot and then hit F8 before the boot screen comes up.

Once you are booted in safe mode you should be able to overwrite the ntoskrnl.exe file with your new one.

That’s about it. Now you can wow your friends with your crazy cool logo that comes up when you start your computer. “Where’s your crazy cool logo Jim?? Oh that’s right, you don’t have one.”…
