 Created as a result of a lawsuit in the aftermath of the Seattle Pilots being purchased and relocated to Milwaukee by Bud Selig. The trial eventually resulted in baseball offering Seattle an expansion ballclub in 1976, the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners played their first game on April 6, 1977 at the sold out Kingdome. They lost 7-0 to the California Angels. That was followed by an abismal 13 years of mediocrity.

The Mariners had their first winning season in 1991 finishing 83-79 under manager Jim Lefebvre. Two years later the Mariners hired Lou Piniella.

During Piniella's tenure the Mariners saw Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, Alex Rodriguez, Randy Johnson, and Ichiro Suzuki blossom into superstars.

In 1995 the Mariners beat the California angels in a one game playoff on their way to their first playoff birth.

In 2001 despite no longer having A-Rod, Randy Johnson, or Jr. the Mariners tied the major league record for most wins in a season with 116 behind the ageless lefty Jamie Moyer, Bret Boone, Edgar and the hit machine import Ichiro Suzuki.

The Mariners are currently building a talented farm system and team. This should vault them back into contention in the near future.
